Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization Source Testing for Pesticide Analysis

More than half of the United States has now legalized cannabis for medical purposes. However, there are no federal guidelines for the analysis of cannabis samples, specifically for pesticide contaminants, which pose a serious health concern for both inhaled cannabis as well as consumables.  Over the past several years, many states have been forced to issue recalls due to this widespread safety issue. Quality testing results to analyze samples are key to ensure cannabis labs can screen and detect all pesticide residues that may be present.

In the article below, ESI (electrospray ionization) and APCI (Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization) are described in a testing analysis method. ESI is the typical source in LC/MS/MS, however, some pesticides do not ionize well using the ESI source. Because of this GC/MS/MS has been used for these compounds.  The article below outlines using APCI as an alternative ionization source so these compounds can be analyzed on LC/MS/MS eliminating the need to have a separate GC/MS/MS method.
