What you are buying

A refurbished Agilent 5977A mass selective detector. This listing is the bare MSD; it attaches to a compatible Agilent 7890-series GC, sold separately. The sample crosses a heated transfer line into the source; the source ionizes each compound; the quadrupole scans the mass range or watches selected ions for trace quantitation. GenTech rebuilds and tests the source and the analyzer, then verifies the detector against reference standards.

What Agilent says about this platform

Agilent built the 5977A around a monolithic hyperbolic quadrupole mass filter, covering a mass range of 1.6 to 1,050 u with mass axis stability better than 0.10 u over 48 hours. A choice of electron ionization sources, standard, inert, or a high-sensitivity extractor, covers routine and trace-level work; an optional chemical ionization source adds positive and negative CI modes alongside EI. Ion source temperature runs from 150 to 350 degrees Celsius, with the quadrupole held between 106 and 200 degrees Celsius. Agilent verifies system performance using instrument detection limit rather than signal-to-noise, an eight-injection test the company considers more reliable than the single-injection S/N approach. An inert flow path from the GC to the detector limits sample loss for reactive compounds.

Transfer line

Carries the separated compounds from a compatible GC’s oven into the mass spectrometer at controlled temperature, with no cold spots to lose heavy analytes.

Ion source

Ionizes each compound as it elutes. Electron ionization produces the reproducible, library-searchable spectra environmental and forensic methods rely on; chemical ionization preserves the molecular ion for confirmation.

Mass analyzer

The quadrupole filters ions by mass. It scans a full spectrum for identification or holds on selected ions for the lowest detection limits in quantitation.
