What you are buying
Environmental, forensic, and food-safety methods that identify and confirm compounds by mass run on the GC-MS the Agilent 5977 MSD delivers. The gas chromatograph separates the mixture; the sample crosses a heated transfer line into the source; the source ionizes each compound; the quadrupole scans the mass range or watches selected ions for trace quantitation. GenTech rebuilds and tests the GC, the source, and the analyzer, then verifies the system end to end. You receive a GC-MS that arrives tuned and ready to run your methods.
Every unit moves through the GenTech Certified process. Solution Scientists disassemble and inspect each module, replace all consumables and degraded wear components, then tune and calibrate the instrument and verify performance against OEM and published benchmarks using known reference chemicals. The instrument ships with its verification report. A certified-refurbished system gives you that performance without the capital cost or the lead time of a new purchase.
What Agilent says about this platform
Agilent built the 5977B around a heated hyperbolic quadrupole mass filter covering 1.6 to 1,050 u, with scan speeds up to 20,000 u per second depending on the source installed. A choice of ion sources, High-Efficiency, stainless steel, inert, or extractor, covers electron ionization along with positive and negative chemical ionization. The Triple-Axis Detector sits off-axis from the quadrupole to cut noise from photons, hot neutrals, and stray electrons. The high-energy dynode runs at -10,000 volts for EI and PCI or +10,000 volts for NCI. The electron multiplier gain is adjustable from 0 to -3,000 volts DC as the horn ages. Cylindrical aluminum radiators house the ion source and mass filter to control heat distribution across the analyzer. Agilent rates mass accuracy on a 100-picogram-per-microliter OFN standard, scanning 50 to 300 u, to within about 5 parts per million of the reference ion, with spectral accuracy above 99 percent on the same standard. The 5977B pairs with the 7890B or 7820 GC and runs MassHunter acquisition software, with ChemStation available for data analysis.
What each component does
Transfer line
Carries the separated compounds from the GC oven into the mass spectrometer at controlled temperature, with no cold spots to lose heavy analytes.
Ion source
Ionizes each compound as it elutes. Electron ionization produces the reproducible, library-searchable spectra environmental and forensic methods rely on; chemical ionization preserves the molecular ion for confirmation.
Mass analyzer
The quadrupole filters ions by mass. It scans a full spectrum for identification or holds on selected ions for the lowest detection limits in quantitation.

What “GenTech Certified” means
Refurbishment at GenTech is a defined process, not a wipe-down. Every system moves through the same five stages.
1. Disassembly and rebuild. Solution Scientists strip the instrument down, clean each module inside and out, and rebuild it from the frame up. They replace pump seals, pistons, and check valves to specification.
2. Configuration and new parts. Solution Scientists install the options and modules you selected and fit new wear parts throughout. They replace the detector lamp with a new one and reset the lamp hours.
3. Diagnostic and performance testing. Solution Scientists tune and calibrate the instrument, run system diagnostics, and confirm detector wavelength accuracy. They test full-system pressure and gradient performance against OEM and published benchmarks using known reference chemicals.
4. Data package you approve before shipment. The verification data goes to you for approval before the system leaves the bench. You see exactly how the instrument performs before it ships.
5. Delivery and installation. The instrument ships in protective packing with a one-year warranty option and professional installation available from a GenTech Solution Scientist.
