What you are buying
A refurbished Agilent 5977E mass selective detector. This listing is the bare MSD, described independent of the 7820A GC it normally ships with. The sample crosses a heated transfer line into the source; the source ionizes each compound; the quadrupole scans the mass range or watches selected ions for trace quantitation.
Every unit moves through the GenTech Certified process. Agilent rates instrument detection limit at 40 femtograms or less for the stainless steel ion source, derived statistically at a 99 percent confidence level from peak area using helium carrier gas and an automatic liquid sampler. MassHunter with MSD ChemStation handles acquisition, sharing a unified workflow across the 5975 and 5977 Series MSDs, the 7000 Series triple quadrupole, the 7200 GC/Q-TOF, and the 7980 Series GC. Synchronous SIM/Scan and AutoSIM setup run alongside one-click autotune for BFB and DFTPP. Optional spectral libraries cover NIST, Wiley, and Pfleger-Maurer drug and standard pesticide databases.
What each component does
Transfer line
Carries the separated compounds from the GC oven into the mass spectrometer at controlled temperature, with no cold spots to lose heavy analytes.
Ion source
A stainless steel ion source ionizes each compound as it elutes, rated to an instrument detection limit of 40 femtograms or less.
Mass analyzer
The quadrupole filters ions by mass. It scans a full spectrum for identification or holds on selected ions for the lowest detection limits in quantitation, with synchronous SIM/Scan available in the same run.

What “GenTech Certified” means
Refurbishment at GenTech is a defined process, not a wipe-down. Every system moves through the same five stages.
1. Disassembly and rebuild. Solution Scientists strip the instrument down, clean each module inside and out, and rebuild it from the frame up. They replace pump seals, pistons, and check valves to specification.
2. Configuration and new parts. Solution Scientists install the options and modules you selected and fit new wear parts throughout. They replace the detector lamp with a new one and reset the lamp hours.
3. Diagnostic and performance testing. Solution Scientists tune and calibrate the instrument, run system diagnostics, and confirm detector wavelength accuracy. They test full-system pressure and gradient performance against OEM and published benchmarks using known reference chemicals.
4. Data package you approve before shipment. The verification data goes to you for approval before the system leaves the bench. You see exactly how the instrument performs before it ships.
5. Delivery and installation. The instrument ships in protective packing with a one-year warranty option and professional installation available from a GenTech Solution Scientist.
