What you are buying
Many established petrochemical, environmental, and clinical methods still run on the capillary GC the Agilent 5890 delivers. The heated inlet vaporizes the sample and carries it onto the column; the programmable oven separates the mixture by volatility and affinity; the detector measures each compound as it elutes. GenTech rebuilds, plumbs, and tests the inlets, detectors, and flow path, then verifies the instrument against reference standards. You receive a 5890 that arrives verified and ready to run your methods.
Every unit moves through the GenTech Certified process. Solution Scientists disassemble and inspect each module, replace all consumables and degraded wear components, then tune and calibrate the instrument and verify performance against OEM and published benchmarks using known reference chemicals. The instrument ships with its verification report. A certified-refurbished system gives you that performance without the capital cost or the lead time of a new purchase.
What Agilent says about this platform
Hewlett-Packard released the original 5890 in 1984 and followed it with the 5890 Series II, which added electronic pressure control. Both models run ambient to 450°C, with split/splitless, on-column, and PTV inlet options and single or dual detector slots for FID, TCD, ECD, and NPD. Electronic pressure control on the Series II gives more accurate, more reproducible flow and pressure than the original’s manual pneumatics. Agilent later inherited the platform from HP and phased out active support in favor of the 6890 and newer GC lines.
What each component does
Inlet
Vaporizes the sample and delivers it to the column. Split/splitless covers routine and dilute samples; packed and purged-packed inlets handle the older packed-column methods the 5890 still serves.
Column oven
Programs through a multi-ramp temperature sequence that separates the mixture by volatility. Reproducible oven control holds retention times steady across runs.
Pneumatic control
Manual or electronic pneumatic control meters the carrier and detector gases. Electronic control, on the units that carry it, tightens retention-time repeatability.
Detectors
The 5890 carries FID for organics, TCD for fixed gases, micro-ECD for halogens, NPD for nitrogen and phosphorus, and FPD for sulfur and phosphorus, up to two at once.

What “GenTech Certified” means
Refurbishment at GenTech is a defined process, not a wipe-down. Every system moves through the same five stages.
1. Disassembly and rebuild. Solution Scientists strip the instrument down, clean each module inside and out, and rebuild it from the frame up. They replace pump seals, pistons, and check valves to specification.
2. Configuration and new parts. Solution Scientists install the options and modules you selected and fit new wear parts throughout. They replace the detector lamp with a new one and reset the lamp hours.
3. Diagnostic and performance testing. Solution Scientists tune and calibrate the instrument, run system diagnostics, and confirm detector wavelength accuracy. They test full-system pressure and gradient performance against OEM and published benchmarks using known reference chemicals.
4. Data package you approve before shipment. The verification data goes to you for approval before the system leaves the bench. You see exactly how the instrument performs before it ships.
5. Delivery and installation. The instrument ships in protective packing with a one-year warranty option and professional installation available from a GenTech Solution Scientist.
