What you are buying
Environmental, forensic, and food-safety methods that identify and confirm compounds by mass run on the GC-MS the Agilent 5973 MSD delivers. This system pairs the 6890 GC and 5973 MSD with a new HTA HT2800T all-in-one autosampler, covering liquid, static headspace, and SPME sampling from a single rotating tower. GenTech rebuilds and tests the GC, the autosampler, the source, and the analyzer, then verifies the system end to end.
Every unit moves through the GenTech Certified process. Solution Scientists disassemble and inspect each module, replace all consumables and degraded wear components, then tune and calibrate the instrument and verify performance against OEM and published benchmarks using known reference chemicals. The instrument ships with its verification report. A certified-refurbished system gives you that performance without the capital cost or the lead time of a new purchase.
What Agilent says about this platform
The HT2800T, made by HTA, combines liquid, static headspace, and SPME sampling in one rotating-tower unit, so the system needs only one autosampler instead of a separate unit for each technique. The rotating tower leaves the injector port clear for inlet maintenance. The sample rack sits away from the GC oven, which keeps samples from degrading or condensing at oven temperature. The 5973 MSD attached to the GC runs an electron ionization source producing positive ions from m/z 2 to 800, with unit mass resolution around 0.6 Da peak width and mass accuracy within 0.2 Da. Agilent rates sensitivity at 1 picogram of C10F8 with a signal-to-noise ratio of 60 to 1, scanning as fast as 8,000 atomic mass units per second. Mass stability holds better than 0.10 amu over 48 hours. The instrument supports Retention Time Locking, which lets a lab build permanent, transferable methods across systems.
What each component does
Gas chromatograph
eparates the mixture on a capillary column. The 6890 runs dual split/splitless injectors to 450°C and a CO2-cooled oven from -40 to 450°C, with full electronic pneumatic control.
All-in-one autosampler
The HT2800T handles liquid injection, static headspace, and SPME sampling from a single rotating tower, keeping the injector port clear for maintenance and the sample rack away from oven heat.
Ion source
An electron ionization source produces positive ions from m/z 2 to 800, generating reproducible, library-searchable spectra.
Mass analyzer
The quadrupole filters ions by mass at unit resolution, scanning as fast as 8,000 amu per second for identification or trace-level quantitation.

What “GenTech Certified” means
Refurbishment at GenTech is a defined process, not a wipe-down. Every system moves through the same five stages.
1. Disassembly and rebuild. Solution Scientists strip the instrument down, clean each module inside and out, and rebuild it from the frame up. They replace pump seals, pistons, and check valves to specification.
2. Configuration and new parts. Solution Scientists install the options and modules you selected and fit new wear parts throughout. They replace the detector lamp with a new one and reset the lamp hours.
3. Diagnostic and performance testing. Solution Scientists tune and calibrate the instrument, run system diagnostics, and confirm detector wavelength accuracy. They test full-system pressure and gradient performance against OEM and published benchmarks using known reference chemicals.
4. Data package you approve before shipment. The verification data goes to you for approval before the system leaves the bench. You see exactly how the instrument performs before it ships.
5. Delivery and installation. The instrument ships in protective packing with a one-year warranty option and professional installation available from a GenTech Solution Scientist.

What you are buying
Most petrochemical, environmental, and food-safety methods call for the capillary GC separations the Agilent 6890N runs. Electronic pneumatic control meters the carrier gas to 0.001 psi; the heated inlet vaporizes the sample and carries it onto the column; the oven programs from 4 to 450°C; the detector measures each compound as it elutes. GenTech rebuilds, plumbs, and tests the inlets, detectors, and flow path. You receive a GC that arrives verified and ready to run your methods.

What Agilent says about this platform
Agilent built the 6890N as the successor to the 5890 series, the best-selling GC line the company had built to that point. The system runs on advanced electronic pneumatic control, each EPC module tuned to its own inlet and detector option. Fast, precise oven ramping and accurate temperature control combine for outstanding retention time repeatability, the foundation Agilent points to for all chromatographic measurement. A full array of traditional gas sampling and column switching valves works with the 6890N. An inert pneumatic switching manifold adds two-dimensional heart-cutting and detector splitting. Agilent discontinued the 6890N and named the 7890A its replacement platform; official Agilent support for the 6890N ended on July 31, 2015.
What each component does
Inlet
Vaporizes the sample and delivers it to the head of the column. Split/splitless handles routine concentrations; the multimode and PTV inlets add programmed temperature for trace work and thermally fragile compounds; cool on-column places the sample directly on the column for the heaviest analytes. The 6890N holds up to two inlets.
Column oven
Programs from 4 to 450°C across 20 ramps and 21 plateaus, with fast ramping to 75°C per minute on a 120 V oven and higher on 240 V. Faster ramps and a four-minute cool-down cut cycle time at the lowest cost per sample.
Electronic pneumatic control
Meters carrier and detector gases to 0.001 psi and 0.05 mL/min and compensates for changes in ambient pressure and temperature. Precise pneumatics are the basis for the retention-time repeatability every quantitative method depends on.
Detectors
The 6890N carries up to three detectors matched to the chemistry: FID for hydrocarbons and general organics, TCD for fixed gases, micro-ECD for halogens and pesticides, NPD for nitrogen and phosphorus, and FPD for sulfur and phosphorus. Flow splitting sends one injection to two detectors for more information per run.
Capillary Flow Technology
Provides leak-free, in-oven connections for backflush, Deans-switch heart-cutting, and two-dimensional GC without cryogen. Backflush vents heavy matrix before it reaches the detector or the MS source, which protects the flow path and removes carryover.
